Next year will mark the 40th anniversary of The Cholmondeleys dance company, founded in 1984 by myself (Lea Anderson), Teresa Barker and Gaynor Coward. When we started The Cholmondeleys we wanted to create something that would interest our friends and their friends. We obsessively discussed what kind of impact we wanted to make. We danced to music and we looked like modern people wearing modern costumes. We called ourselves The Cholmondeleys like it was a band.
There was a lot of fashion and music, cabaret and clubbing going on at that time. Everyone I knew was doing their own thing – making art, magazines, designing and making clothes, performing in bands, starting record labels, running nightclub evenings, holding parties in warehouses. It was the aftermath of punk, and DIY culture was freshly exciting and there was a lot of it about. Our performances arose from this exhilarating time, and feature collaborations between a range of inspiring British artists including (among others), choreographer Lea Anderson, costume designers Sandy Powell, Emma Fryer and Simon Vincenzi, composers Drostan Madden & Steve Blake, and lighting designer Simon Corder.
The Cholmondeleys, alongside their brother company The Featherstonehaughs (founded in 1988) made over 87 works, both live and on film. We performed throughout the UK and internationally. A vital part of our creative legacy remains in our rich archive of images taken by photographers Chris Nash, Pau Ros, Pete Moss, Eddie Monsoon, Douglas Brothers and Matilda Temperley among others.
To date, there is no book dedicated solely to the work of The Cholmondeleys & The Featherstonehaughs. We’re changing that! And we’re changing it with a celebratory, sumptuously designed hardback volume filled with full colour photographs, edited by Mary Kate Connolly and designed by Pep Sala.
